I’m happy to have this legendary book as my first Math book read from cover to cover. Thompson’s little book is the best that I’ve seen, yet.

Distills calculus down to its essence in a beautiful way. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. It’s certainly light on rigor, but for an introductory primer,that’s not such a terrible thing. A must have for high school students and parents or teachers who wish to teach children calculus. The author does indeed present the subject in a way that is easy to understand, and in a style that is entertaining. Good, this is making a comeback.

But no, this little gem had seen by then three dozen reprintings starting in Hence I picked up this book. Gardner changes “fifth form boys” to the more American sounding and gender neutral “high school students,” updates many now obsolescent mathematical notations or terms, and uses American decimal dollars and cents in currency examples.

Overall, it serves my intended purpose of refreshing myself and solidifying the concepts I learnt in high school, which I learnt by rote-learning then. The author acknowledges that the language of calculus is obtuse and pokes some fun at the mathematicians that came up with. Calculus made easy was a fun, mde, and elegant transition from simple algebra into the world of calculus.

I would read in one until I couldn’t go any farther, then I would read in the other up to the same subject point.

I guess it’s understandable that Gardner wanted to do more than just change the wording given that his name is all over the cover, jade he has not improved the book as far as I am concerned. So highly recommended to a bright high-schooler or baffled undergrad, ideally to be followed by Slvanus Primer of Infinitesimal Analysisif you can convince people that you don’t need the standard analysis curriculum.
